“Because of the nasty possibility of recrimination exists (it’s a very powerful and corrupt industry after all) I will submit this review anonymously.

After moving from Ohio to California, I experienced a gap in coverage from a previous contract to my most recent one. I opted to pay for another month (at 270 usd) so that I could retain coverage until my new coverage kicked in.

I shouldn’t have bothered. After getting routine tests done for type-2 diabetes (which I specified as a precondition on my form) I got a bunch of letters from MMOH asking if each item (referred to by some obscure number – not an actual description of the test or visit) pertained to a pre-existing condition and what and when it was treated. As my diabetes history goes back several years and spans several countries, I couldn’t even begin to imagine where to begin to answer that!

In any case, before I even had a chance to answer I was already informed that the test expenses would NOT be covered by MMOH, and I would be billed directly by the health care provider. Therefore I just wasted that 272 usd month of coverage payment, since I now have to pay for everything directly anyway.

This kind of shysterism is, unfortunately, endemic to the whole broken and corrupt insurance industry in this country but is nonetheless unacceptable. DO NOT GET MMOH, if you are moving, or have light medical expenses that limited indemnity might be able to handle. My limited indemnity has worked out relatively well, and I’m glad for the competition it gives to ol’ Blue Cross, who thought people would forget about their terrible reputation if they just changed their name to Medical Mutual.

You will not get reliable information from MMOH in any case, so why waste the money?”

“Medical Mutual’s policy is loaded with exceptions for services that are routinely covered by other health insurers.

After receiving an extremely ordinary health service, I was surprised by a notice from Med Mutual that they chose to cover 0% of it, and I now owe $800+ for a routine service.

My health provider has tried in vain to work with Med Mutual to get them to cover any portion of it. And my health provider says that they have regularly provided this exact service for thousands of other patients with different insurers, and it’s routinely covered every time.

Worse, Med Mutual’s reason for denying coverage keeps shifting. I’ve been told: “”This service was classified as X, and we don’t cover X,”” and “”We cover X, but this service was classified as Y.””

Med Mutual also has an appeals process. I submitted my claim for an appeal, which promptly fell into a black hole and prompted no response.

This is NOT my first problem with Med Mutual, but it will be my last. I am canceling my policy as soon as possible and will send my considerable insurance premiums to one of their competitors.

Bottom line: Med Mutual = (exorbitantly expensive premiums + exception-ridden policy) = avoid like the plague.”

Worst Insurance company I have ever dealt with. Rejected every prescription by every one of my doctors. They just don’t care.
