Assurant Health: History

Assurant Health has been a provider of health insurance since 1892. They provide insurance in all states except for Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont. With over 3,000 employees in the US and 15,000 employees worldwide, they pride themselves on topnotch customer service and providing members with quick reliable service.

Assurant Financial Strength Ratings

The financial stability of Assurant is top rated. A.M. Best rating company has given Assurant an A- which is excellent. An excellent rating means that a company can be trusted to meet its financial obligations and provide for its customers when claims need to be met. It is a Fortune 500 company with over $25 billion in assets. This is reassuring to potential customers, but what options are available?

Assurant Individual Medical Plans

The individual health insurance plans Assurant offers are ideal for those who don’t work full-time, those who are self-employed, those who are retired but don’t yet qualify for Medicare, or those who have a job that does not offer insurance. The main components of the Assurant individual health insurance plans offered allow customers to have flexibility with quality coverage.
They offer individual members a lifetime benefit maximum of up to $8 million. The insured can see a specialist without a referral. Since Assurant is a worldwide company, coverage is available worldwide. Choosing a doctor or hospital can be done from a huge network of qualified employers. In additional to all this, rates are guaranteed not to change during the first year of coverage.

Assurant Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s)

Assurant was one of the first health insurance companies to offer health savings accounts. HSA’s are accounts that allow you to deposit money before you pay taxes on it. You can use the money to pay your deductible, co-pays, and other qualifying medical expenses. The good thing about HSA’s is that they do not have a time limit. If you have money left over at the end of a calendar year, it rolls over to the next year.
There are some great features to Assurant’s HSA’s. For example, you can get funds out when you need them and you can use the money for items that would not be covered by an insurance plan like over the counter drugs. If you should have a need for long term care, you can use your health insurance account to cover expenses. Then, after you turn 65 you can use the funds for non-medical expenses. It is like a back up retirement fund.

Assurant Small Business Health Insurance

Assurant also provides health insurance options for small businesses with 2-50 employees. Small business insurance plans are called Real Choices Medical Plans. This is because Assurant wants to offer business owners real choices they can pass on to their employees. Studies show that one of the major reasons for job turn over is lack of health insurance options. If employees have the options they need, they will stay at a job longer.
The types of Real Choices plans offered range in their coverage and cost to give small business owners of varying levels of income choices. Major Medical is the broadest coverage option available through Real Choices. Consumer Choice Plans rely heavily on health savings accounts and reimbursement options for the insured.
Another option is a Self-funded plan. This means that the employer covers all medical expenses of employees out of pocket up to a pre-determined amount. Assurant offers Stop-Loss Insurance to the employer to protect the business should a high number of claims be made during one year. In addition to this, Assurant offer Ancillary Products such as dental, life-insurance, and short-term disability.

Asurant Short Term and Student Coverage

Assurant also offers short term and student coverage. Short term coverage is for people who are between jobs, have started a new job but benefits have a waiting period, recent graduates, or as an affordable alternative to COBRA. Student Medical plans are available for students who are not married and do not qualify to be covered under their parent’s plan an longer. Or in some cases, student coverage can be supplemental if students live away from their parent’s in-network providers.

“Assurant Health is atrocious. From the horrible customer service to the inaccurate information the company as a whole is as bad as they come.

During a major injury where I was laid up for months, I had to constantly haggle with them to get them to even pay on the policy that was current. The admit/assume no fault of their own and are not here to help or serve you, the customer, but rather to provide a place that screws the general public out of their hard-earned money while still providing little to no care at all.

    Truly a horrible experience.”

“My husband and I have had Assurant Health insurance on and off for the last 10 years. I had one incident with a long wait time for customer service, but it was mid day, mid week, and they must have been busy.

All in all, we feel comfortable with the products and network options they provide.”

“Horrible health insurance, they cover almost nothing, putting me in debt. I hope they go out of business as fast as possible. Blue Cross is the way to go..

stay away from Assurant. It’s a scam. You will see when you get the bills from hospital…it has to go out of business. Again from 1 to 10 it’s a solid -10.”

“I am self-employed and decided to buy their individual plan. They signed me up for the wrong plan (not the one I asked for) and it still hasn’t been fixed after 2 weeks. Did not send a written acknowledgment nor a new ID card… Today my prescription was rejected.

I tried to log on to the website to print out a new ID card to take to the doctor’s appointment but it is not recognizing my info..
    Stay away from this outfit.

This was the only company cited by the US Govt regulators for raising their premiums beyond allowable amount according to my Google search.. I will probably try to hang on for one year then go with someone else.”
