AF and L Insurance Company

AF&L Insurance Company was formerly known as American Fidelity & Liberty Insurance Company until the adoption of its new name in 2001. The company was established in 1987 as a stock life insurance company active in underwriting long-term insurance policies for accident care and general health. The company specializes in products for seniors including long-term home care and nursing home care. AF&L Insurance Company is located in Warminster, Pennsylvania.

AF&L continues operating today as a subsidiary of American Fidelity & Liberty. Their parent company has a long-standing reputation for firm financial footing and stable growth. They experienced a slight downturn approximately six years ago, which resulted in lower stability ratings, but the company has since rebounded . AF&L Insurance Company is now among the fastest growing supplemental insurance providers in the country.

AF&L Insurance Company Agents and Locations

Few details are currently available for this company because their website is undergoing a major rebuild and is still under construction. However, it appears that the only offices the company maintains are the Pennsylvania headquarters. While it is possible they have regional offices around the country, this probably is unlikely. They are more apt to maintain a single office due to the fact that they sell and service policies through a network of local independent agents.

AF&L Insurance Company’s previous website provided two links for their agent network. One link was for current agents to logon to the system and access agent tools. The second link was to allow new potential agents to apply to represent AF&L Insurance Company. It is unclear how large their network of agents is, but it is assumed you should be able to find one in your local area regardless of where in the United States you live. You might consider checking with a few health and life insurance agents near you to see if they represent AF&L Insurance Company.

AF&L Insurance Company Claims

Because AF&L Insurance Company is a supplemental insurance underwriter, claims are often processed on a direct-to-customer basis. In other words, the customer will pay his own expenses out of pocket and then submit a claim to the insurance company. AF&L will then write a check directly to the customer for reimbursement. In some cases, such as long-term nursing home care, AF&L may make payment directly to the institution. Details must be worked out between customer and the insurance company.

It is important to note that due to the nature of their insurance products, AF&L will not necessarily accept every new customer who applies for a policy. Pre-existing conditions cost a lot of money to cover, so many insurance companies, AF&L included, have strict guidelines as to which of these conditions they will cover. AF&L has a reputation for being a bit more lenient than some of their competitors, but certainly not as lenient as others.

Seniors looking for long-term home health or nursing home care will need to speak with an AF&L agent and divulge the details about all of their pre-existing conditions. The agent has a handbook that includes guidelines for accepting or rejecting an application. He will consult that handbook according to information you supply in order to make a determination.

Customers who are rejected by AF&L do have other options available. There are other insurance companies that write policies on a much more lenient basis; you just need to persevere in your search.

AF&L Insurance Company Reviews

Reviews about AF&L Insurance Company are a mixed bag. A brief Internet search revealed a 50-50 ratio of positive to negative reviews. Among the positive reviews, many customers mentioned that they were accepted without hassle, even with certain pre-existing conditions. Many wrote that they had been with the company for many years and had always received good customer service. Customers who are pleased with AF&L seem to be prepared to recommend the company to others.

On the other hand, one of the more common complaints against AF&L Insurance Company is that their claims process is slower than expected. One customer in particular spoke about submitting a claim for her mother’s treatment and having to wait at least 10 days before AF&L even reviewed the paperwork. At the time of her post she was still waiting for the company to make a decision on whether or not they would pay. Other complaints against AF&L include representatives who are not knowledgeable of health insurance needs, and agents who are less responsive than they should be.

“I bought a long-term policy from an agent in Lancaster back in 2000. I have had premiums deducted regularly for the amount of $50.27 cents from my checking account at Fulton Bank.

At one time I needed home assistance while recovering from gall bladder surgery, but since I needed to first pay for the first week and I did not need the service for over two weeks, insurance never paid.

Now I tried to contact the company to get an update on my coverage and “”They can’t find my records””, though the premiums are still being deducted from my bank account.

I am now 82 years old and can’t find a copy of the policy, but I know they were supposed to pay up to 2 years of home care at $65.00 a day to the caregiver. What recourse do I have? I live at the same address…”

I am a policyholder for at least 14 years. I have been diagnosed with cancer which will be operated on and will require hospitalization and months of follow-up in a facility. I need to set up procedure for the payout per diem for several months. Advise. Thanks.

“My mother has used her long-term health care policy since 2009. I believe it was under another company when she bought it through the school system years ago She had to meet the 90-day criteria before the long-term health care policy would pay for her home care. AS long as we follow the policy she signed up for AF&L has been faithful to pay everything in her policy as it was written years ago.

As long as a have her policy number available they will answer all my questions in a friendly manner. While there are some areas I would change to better meet her needs AF&L has always met their part of mother’s contract. Thank you”

“I have found AF&L Insurance company very difficult to deal with compared to many others I deal with in managing claims for our clients. They refuse to accept monthly invoices with a functional fax or email option. They want to do everything their way, unlike any other company, and then threaten and make excuses to not pay claims.

Not worth dealing with AF&L Insurance company. Make another company your choice for Long Term Care Insurance.”

If I could put negative starts, I would absolutely do it. This company is horrible. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else for insurance.

On the day of my dad’s funeral, AF&L sent my mother a bill for $38,000.00 stating that he did not have coverage for care and services after all, and that they overpaid. The policy clearly states that he did have coverage, so she’s fighting it. Absolutely horrible!!

Had to have home health care for several weeks after hip replacement and rehab stay. Needed help with dressing, bathing, going to bathroom, fixing meals, laundry, etc. The company I used has sent paperwork to AF&L several times but each time they say it’s not the information they need. After several phone calls to them, I received a letter that says they’re not approving the claims because I didn’t require continuous supervision due to a cognitive impairment. What the heck does that mean? Been paying for this insurance for 20+ years. This just is not right!

  8. Stephen says:

“After my mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer we reviewed her LTC policy which was started in 2002. Unfortunately, she never recovered. So the LTC was never ever used. They have been very uncooperative and became angry after I brought in the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance after being unable to confirm they had received paperwork on her death.
Their excuse was their phone lines were down and I should have known this because of storms. (I live 900 miles from the idiots.)
Found out no money will be coming except for the deduction made after death. (I had informed them of death before deduction.)
Do yourself a favor, do NOT do a policy with this sorry excuse of a company. Find someone else that has backup plans in the event of a natural disaster.”

  9. Anna says:

Reviewing for LTC. Not the best, not the worst. They do seem to pay eventually, although not in full. I have been working for six months to address an underpayment issue of several thousand $. It took 4 months and countless phone calls to receive a response from their claims department, and some of the money is still missing. Their customer service people are just mouthpieces, and it is impossible to have a conversation with someone who actually reviews the claims and is a position to understand or explain the payments.

I am trying to take care of my parents who have AF&L long term care. I find AF&L to be extremely difficult to deal with. It takes forever to process a claim, which is monthly for long term care. I spend more time fighting with AF&L than I do trying to help my parents. They deem nearly every claim form “incomplete”. However they do not tell you it is incomplete. You wind up having to call after a few weeks of silence, only to discover that they are not paying your claim. They also are technologically stuck in the 1950’s. They want to do everything by snail mail or fax. They lose documents that customers send in. In my opinion, they make it difficult so they don’t have to pay out. Since customers deal directly with the company, there is no recourse. Go somewhere else to buy your long term care.
