Health Insurance for Army Reservists

“To sum it up…”

  • Army reservists and their families are eligible to enroll in the TRICARE Reserve Select program
  • Reservists have to pay a monthly premium for these benefits
  • Retired reserve members can enroll in a different program known as the TRICARE Retired Reserve program
  • Additional dental and pharmacy benefit are also available for purchase

TRICARE is the standard insurance coverage for all members of the armed forces. TRICARE Reserve Select is similar in nature to the TRICARE Standard and Extra programs, but it is specifically designed for reservists who are not on active duty.

Members of the army reserve are required to pay a monthly premium toward their coverage. If you are eligible for TRICARE Reserve Select, you can enroll at any time because there is no open enrollment period. If you choose to add your family members to your plan, your monthly premium will increase.

TRICARE Reserve Select will cover any treatment services that are offered by an authorized medical provider. When you see a medical professional in the TRICARE network, you will pay less for the service. You are also able to use military clinics when there is space available.

Most medical treatments do not require prior authorization under this plan. However, in some cases, you may have to pay at the time of service and file later for reimbursement.

If you are retired from the army reserves and under the age of 60, you can enroll in and pay the premium for the TRICARE Retired Reserve program. After you turn 60, you can enroll in a different TRICARE program for retired military members that does not require a monthly premium payment.

When you turn 65, you can change your health insurance coverage again by enrolling in Medicare and Tricare for Life, which should lower your out-of-pocket costs.

Family members of retired reservists are also eligible for TRICARE Retired Reserve coverage. You can enroll in the program online. You can see any medical provider that is authorized by the TRICARE system. However, your out-of-pocket costs will be less expensive if you use a provider within your plan’s network.

Members of the army reserve who are on active duty are eligible for TRICARE Active Duty Dental coverage. This insurance plan covers dental treatment at private civilian facilities.

The TRICARE dental plan is for family members of those in the military and for reservists who are not on active duty.

In order to qualify for the TRICARE dental plan, reserve members must have at least one year left in the service because you enroll in the plan for a one-year period.

You have to pay a monthly premium towards this service, as well as some additional out-of-pocket costs. The price varies depending on your military status and whether you enroll as an individual or on a family plan. This program is available in the United States and abroad.

If you are stationed in the United States, you can enroll in the program online. If you are stationed outside of the United States, it is not possible to enroll online.

TRICARE Reserve Select does offer prescription drug coverage, and the TRICARE pharmacy program allows recipients to fill their prescriptions in several convenient ways.

It is a good idea to use a military pharmacy if there is one in your area because there will be no out-of-pocket expenses. TRICARE’s home delivery pharmacy is the next best option when you don’t live near a military pharmacy. An out-of-network pharmacy will cost you the most money.
