What type of health insurance does the President have?

“To sum it up…”

Where does the President of the United States of America receive his healthcare services?

President Donald Trump, like most presidents before him, receives his medical care from the White House medical unit. However, he has several other options for health care as well. Since he is the Commander in Chief of the United States armed forces, he is entitled to some medical military benefits.

This means that he can receive health care, including surgeries and emergency medical services, at any of the military hospitals located in the Washington D.C. area, where the White House is located.

The Walter Reed Army Medical Center is situated directly in Washington D.C., but the president can also receive care at the National Naval Medical Center which is a bit farther away in Bethesda, Maryland.

What does the White House Medical Unit do?

The White House Medical Unit is located directly inside of the White House and functions like a small medical clinic. In addition to the military doctors that are employed at the White House Medical Unit, there are also physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, and some other relevant medical professionals.

There are exam rooms and medical equipment located in the unit as well as some prescription drugs. The first family is eligible to be treated at the White House Medical Unit, as are visitors to the white house and various employees.

Additionally, staff members of the White House Medical Unit will travel on board Air Force One with the president. Air Force One is equipped with an operating table in case there is an emergency that requires the medical unit employees to immediately operate on the President.

Currently, the lead White House physician and director of the White House Medical Unit is Dr. Ronny Jackson. He is a rear admiral in the United States navy and he has served as the lead White House physician since 2013 under former President Barack Obama.

He also worked in the White House Medical Unit under President George W. Bush after graduating with a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch and serving in the Iraq War.

The President of the United States can choose their own physician to work in the White House Medical Unit and come with them on board Air Force One. However, most White House physicians do tend to be military doctors, like Dr. Ronny Jackson.

What is the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program?

The President of the United States can also enroll in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program if he wishes. Members of Congress, White House staff members, and most other federal employees are also eligible to enroll in this particular health insurance program.

Certain members of tribal organizations may be eligible as well. Some employees are excluded from enrolling in this program based on their position. Those who work part-time or who are only seasonal employees may have certain restrictions or they may be deemed ineligible.

There are many different plans to choose from in this program. Members can get high deductible plans with lower monthly premiums that will really only cover them in the case of a catastrophic emergency.

If a federal employee enrolls in a high deductible health care plan, they are also typically eligible for a health savings account to help offset the out of pocket costs.

Other types of plans in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program include Nationwide Fee-for-Service plans, Preferred Provider Organizations, and Health Maintenance Organizations. Some of these plans typically require you to see a doctor within the provider’s network.

Federal employees can enroll in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program online during the open season. Federal employees can also change or cancel their plans during this time as well.

When an employee is hired outside of the open enrollment season, they have 60 days after they are eligible for a plan to enroll in one.
