UCT provides various forms of insurance to members in most states in the U.S. and parts of Canada. Only Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, and Washington State do not have members in the 100,000-strong membership of UCT.

History of United Commercial Travelers

UCT was started in 1888 in Columbus, Ohio to provide insurance products for traveling salesmen. The image of the sample case, the case that salesmen would carry to house examples of their wares, became the symbol of UCT.

In 1899, UCT followed the railroads into Canada, providing insurance for the masses that followed the work and industry that was created there.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, UCT started many community-oriented directives, such as scholarships and support for people with intellectual disabilities, which are still top projects today.

In 2010, UCT underwent a marketing rebranding to attract members from younger generations while maintaining its history and mission. The company’s new logo became “Where Community and Compassion Unite.”

United Commercial Travelers Products

UCT offers affordable lines of insurance to individuals and families. Availability of each line of insurance varies from state to state.

There are four different life insurance plans offered by UCT for members. Life Guard 1 is a decreasing term life insurance that provides greater benefits to younger clients to provide for spouses and children when a family’s financial footing is usually the weakest. Benefits decrease with age, ending at age 69.

Next, the whole life insurance plan will provide an inheritance to loved ones free of federal income tax.

Thirdly, term life insurance is available for any length of time needed; total coverage can be up to $250,000. There is also an automatic rider that provides 25% of the plan’s benefit if the insured is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Lastly, there is a final expense plan that can provide from $3,000 to $25,000 to cover end-of-life expenses.

UCT also offers health insurance with many different options to suit its members. Short term medical will cover those who are between jobs or only receive company health benefits for part of the year. Supplement insurance is available to cover gaps in Medicare.

Dental, vision and hearing insurances, areas that most employers view as optional benefits, are available in a range of deductible and benefit levels from UCT.

Accident insurance is also available from UCT with a number of different plans. The Emergicare Plus plan is designed to cover gaps in other insurance plans for the expenses associated with emergency room and follow-up visits that result from an accident. The Accidental Death and Hospital Indemnity Plan (ADHIP) is designed to cover expenses associated with long hospital stays for up to 365 days; it also pays an accidental death benefit.

The Membership and Accident Coverage Protection plan (MAC) is an accident-only plan that pays direct monetary amounts per specific injury.

The company also offers annuities and travel insurance to its members. U.S. members can also receive insurance from UCT to cover possessions such as:

  • Auto
  • Home
  • Pet
  • Identity theft
  • Laptop and PDA
