Ohio State Health Insurance Program has two types of plans available to students, a comprehensive plan, and the WilceCare Supplement plan. Students who have another type of coverage are able to sign a waiver coverage form that allows them to be exempt from the Ohio State Health Insurance Company coverage.

Ohio State Student Health Insurance Program Comprehensive Plan

The comprehensive plan is an affordable plan that provides the coverage necessary for the average college student. A Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee works along with the Council on Student Life and the Board of Trustees to put together the most comprehensive plan possible, while still being economical.

Comprehensive coverage includes:

  • Inpatient care
  • Outpatient care
  • Preventative care
  • Well care visits
  • Pharmacy coverage
  • Dental coverage
  • Vision coverage

There are some exclusions and limitations that are applied to the plan based on previous medical conditions, cause of injury and type of injury.

Another large part of the plan that the Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee pushed to have added is mental health care coverage. This includes:

  • Professional counseling
  • Mental health evaluations
  • Medications prescribed by a psychiatrist for mental health issues

Many students go through temporary mental health issues such as depression during college that need to be treated right away.

Another great feature of the comprehensive plan is that it is worldwide. The coverage includes providers in Franklin County, the state of Ohio, the entire United States, and many other countries. It is also available year round. This means that even during the summer, between terms, and during breaks, coverage stays active. Some enrollment guidelines must be followed.

Ohio State Student Health Insurance Program WilceCare Supplement Plan

Some students come to campus with coverage for major or catastrophic incidents, but without the proper coverage for the minor illnesses, bumps, and bruises that can take place at college. This is especially true for those who are covered under a parent’s HMO or PPO and cannot see providers out-of-state or out-of-network for minor illnesses. Student coverage under parental plans often only covers major events.

Wilce Student Health Center is an on campus clinic that treats minor illnesses and injuries. Students can walk in for treatment or make an appointment. Minor issues can be treated without having to leave campus or find a doctor. Prescriptions for antibiotics and other minor needs can also be filled through the center.

Things like lab tests, in office procedures, x-rays, office visits, physical therapy, and prescriptions are covered 100% up to $2,000 per year with prescription coverage up to $500 per year. This is not an insurance program, but instead is meant to supplement an already existing plan. If a student has a major medical incident or needs hospitalization, another insurance plan must be in place.

As stated above, everything is covered up to the maximum. There are a few prescription drugs that are an exception to this and require a $10 co-pay in order to be filled. In addition, allergy shots are split 50/50 between the plan and the patient. All of this is available for $187 per enrollment year. This means the first day of school in the fall until the last day of school in the spring, unless summer classes are taken. In that case, it is year round coverage.

Ohio State Student Health Insurance Program Dependent Options

Since not all college students are single, the need sometimes arises to add a dependent to the insurance program. This can only be done at the time of enrollment unless an event happens during the academic year to change the dependent status. For example, a student who gets married during the academic year or a student who becomes a parent during an academic year can both change the dependent status of the plan.

This is a new policy voted on and passed by the Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee. They received many requests from married students for a health insurance option that included the entire family. Many students have since taken advantage of this change in the policy, providing healthcare for their spouses and children.
