Navigators Insurance Company History

Navigators was founded in 1974 and at that time known as New York Marine Managers International Property and Casualty Company. They were a managing agency for marine insurance. In 1981, this company combined with several other similar groups underwriting marine insurance policies and became known as the Navigators Group. By 1986, the company was publicly traded, and by 1989, they had opened an office in London and spread their business overseas.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Navigators acquired additional companies as subsidiaries allowing them to underwrite additional types of insurance in a wider market. By the late 1990s, Navigators had joined with Lloyd’s of London and formed a consortium to write engineering and construction policies as well as policies for onshore energy companies. Throughout the 21st century Navigators has continued to grow, acquiring additional subsidiaries and offices around the country and world.
